2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron: Australian Debut Confirmed for Enhanced Electric SUV

T

he long-awaited entry of the 2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron into theAustralian market has been officially confirmed, aligning perfectly with the global update of this remarkable electric SUV. Enthusiasts in Australia can anticipate the first customer deliveries to commence in mid-2024.

Audi's decision to synchronise the Australian debut with the global update mirrors a strategic approach previously employed by Volkswagen with its ID.3, which has proven mutually beneficial for both automakers. Audi's local team revealed that the timing of this announcement, coinciding with the Melbourne EV show, couldn't have been more opportune. This development follows persistent efforts by the Australian team to advocate for their market, particularly after initial production challenges and the increasing significance of countries with CO2 mandates.

The impending arrival of the Q4 E-Tron has Audi poised for an uptick in demand for this electrifying SUV, available in both Sportback and wagon body styles. This optimism is well-founded, especially considering the anticipated reception surpassing that of the Q8 E-Trons previously introduced in Australia.

The excitement surrounding the Q4 E-Tron's debut is grounded in its impressive features and competitive pricing. In its home European market, the Q4 E-Tron boasts an attractive price point, with the entry-level E-Tron 45 retailing for the equivalent of AU$88,000 in Germany.

Upon its Australian release, the Q4 E-Tron will engage in fierce competition with rivals such as the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC, along with the high-end iterations of the Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.4/ID.5.

What's Fresh in the Q4 E-Tron?

The Q4 E-Tron lineup has undergone a significant reshuffling, with the discontinuation of the short-range 35 variant. The E-Tron 40 has been succeeded by the E-Tron 45, available in both single and twin-motor configurations. Meanwhile, the dual-motor E-Tron 50 has transitioned into the E-Tron 55.

All Q4 E-Tron models now come equipped with a 77kWh usable battery (82kWh gross) designed for rapid charging, allowing for a swift 10-80%charge in a mere 28 minutes for Quattro models (capable of 170kW DC charging, while non-Quattro variants top out at 135kW DC).

The standout feature among the Q4 E-Tron's enhancements is the remarkable driving range. The rear-wheel-drive E-Tron 45 Sportback offers an impressive 562km range in WLTP testing, a significant improvement from the pre-update model's 534km range. This boost in range owes credit to a larger battery, improved battery cooling, and refined software optimisation.

In addition, the Q4 E-Tron introduces a novel permanently excited synchronous motor mounted on the rear axle, delivering a robust 210kW of power (an increase of 60kW) in the E-Tron 45, translating to a brisk 6.7-second 0-100km/h acceleration time. The E-Tron 45 Quattro shares the same performance figures, albeit with the added advantage of dual motors. The high-performance 55 Quattro models pack an impressive 250kW punch and sprint to100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Audi has also introduced a sportier 15mm lower suspension package across the range, while fine-tuning damping, spring, and steering characteristics to elevate the overall driving experience.

Noteworthy technological upgrades include Audi's revamped camera and radar systems, which enable the adaptive cruise control and lane-trace assist to collaborate seamlessly with the blind-spot monitor, facilitating automatic lane changes at freeway speeds ranging from 90 to130km/h.

While the interior largely retains its previous design, all Q4 E-Tron models now feature a larger touchscreen and digital driver's display. Additionally, the connected navigation system includes a battery route planner. To add a unique touch, Audi has introduced a synthesised 'character sound' toprovide the Q4 E-Tron with a distinctive auditory identity.

With the highly anticipated 2024 Audi Q4 E-Tron's arrival on the horizon in Australia, electric vehicle enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as they prepare to welcome Audi's cutting-edge electric SUV into their market with open arms.
