Did You Know? Australia Introduces Safety Labels for Electric and Hydrogen-Powered Vehicles

I

n a bid to enhance safety during rescue operations involving electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles, Queensland (as well as most other states and Territories) has introduced a mandatory requirement for specific labels on the front and rear number plates.

This regulation applies to electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that were either built or modified after 1 January 2019.

For those acquiring a new electric or hydrogen vehicle, label requirements should be discussed with the vehicle dealer, who will ensure compliance with safety standards. In the case of modified vehicles, the labels can be conveniently ordered through the MTA Queensland (MTAQ) website.

It's important to note that the Transport and Main Roads(TMR) authority has not stipulated a specific method for attaching these labelsto number plates. Popular methods include screws, pop rivets, or adhesive/double-sided tape.

This safety initiative aims to protect emergency services workers and ensure a swift and secure response in rescue situations involving these advanced vehicle technologies. Stay informed and keep our roads safer for everyone!
